1890 Melbourne Cup

The 1890 Melbourne Cup was a two-mile handicap horse race at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday, 4 November 1890. It had the largest field ever, with 39 runners. The winner was Carbine, ridden by jockey Robert Ramage and trained by Walter Hickenbotham for owner Donald Smith Wallace. Carbine carried the top weight of 10 stone 5 pounds (65.75 kg). The winning time was 3 minutes 28.25 seconds, and the final odds were 4/1. The race was run on turf and about 85,000 people attended. This win was Hickenbotham’s second Cup victory.
