1881 Luxembourg general election
In Luxembourg, 14 June 1881 saw partial general elections for the Chamber of Deputies. Voting took place in eight cantons: Capellen, Clervaux, Diekirch, Esch-sur-Alzette, Grevenmacher, Luxembourg-Ville, Redange and Vianden. If no candidate reached the required threshold in the first round, a second-round runoff was held on the same day.
Results in summary
- The Chamber’s composition was recorded as 26 liberals, 9 conservative liberals, and 7 extreme clericals.
- In Vianden, the initial winner François Berger was not allowed to take his seat because he was not domiciled in Luxembourg at the time. A by-election was held on 7 December, which was won by Schaack after a runoff with Hess.
Winners by canton
- Capellen: Norbert Metz, Edouard Hemmer, Théodore Risch won seats (all elected in the first round).
- Clervaux: Jean-Baptiste Fallize and Nicolas Cariers won seats (first round); Joseph Conzemius won in the runoff.
- Diekirch: Victor Tschiderer, Pierre Toussaint, Jean-Pierre Salentiny won seats.
- Esch-sur-Alzette: Charles de Tornaco won a seat.
- Grevenmacher: Zénon de Muyser won a seat.
- Luxembourg-Ville: Tony Dutreux, Antoine Pescatore, Charles-Jean Simons won seats.
- Redange: Nicolas Breisdorff and Rénilde-Guillaume Jacques won seats; Jean Orianne won in the runoff.
- Vianden: François Berger was initially elected, but his seat was later filled by Schaack after the by-election.
