1817 in Germany (short version)

In 1817, the German states were part of the German Confederation, created after Napoleon’s defeat. The big event was the Wartburg Festival in Eisenach (October 18–19), where students and professors gathered at Wartburg Castle to celebrate German culture, push for national unity, and call for reforms. The festival showed rising nationalist and liberal feelings, but authorities cracked down afterward and tightened censorship. Outside of this, life included economic changes and cultural growth, while politics remained in the hands of monarchies. The year helped fuel the early German nationalist movement that would influence future reforms and eventual unification.
