A special election in Massachusetts's 4th district was held on August 24, 1801, to fill a vacancy after Levi Lincoln Sr. resigned on March 5, 1801 to become U.S. Attorney General. Massachusetts law required a majority to win, and the June 22, 1801 ballot failed to produce a winner, so a second election was held on August 24, 1801. Hastings took his seat on January 11, 1802.
