1598 in France
1598 in France was a turning point that helped end years of fighting and set the country on the path to rebuilding.
- Edict of Nantes: In April 1598, King Henry IV granted the Huguenots (French Protestants) limited rights to worship and civil protections, while Catholicism remained the state religion. This brought an end to much of the religious fighting and offered a path to religious coexistence.
- Peace with Spain: In May 1598, France and Spain signed the Peace of Vervins, ending the war between the two countries and bringing broader peace to France.
- Aftermath: These events helped stabilize the country and laid the groundwork for Henry IV’s efforts to rebuild and unite France.
