Zygopetalum maculatum
Zygopetalum maculatum is an orchid native to Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. It grows in very wet, moss-covered, semi-boggy areas at elevations of 1,100–2,500 meters (3,600–8,200 feet). The plant produces a 40 cm (16 in) inflorescence with eight to twelve fragrant flowers. Each flower is 4–8 cm (1.6–3.1 in) wide and is green with red-brown markings, featuring a white lip marked with violet. When pollination succeeds, the flowers close slightly and stay healthy and colorful for up to three months; if not pollinated, they wilt after about one month.
