Wincenty Teofil Popiel
Wincenty Teofil Popiel (21 July 1825 – 7 December 1912) was a Polish Catholic priest who became Archbishop of Warsaw, serving from 1883 to 1912. He had earlier been the Bishop of Płock (1863–1875) and the Bishop of Kujawy–Kaliska (1875–1883).
Early life and education
Popiel was born in Czaple Wielkie in 1825. His father, Konstanty Popiel, was a senator, and his mother was Zofia von Badenich. He was educated at home and then at a boarding school in Kraków run by Józef Kremer. He studied law in Warsaw and worked in the judiciary before deciding to pursue priestly training after his father’s death.
Religious training and early career
In 1847 he began seminary studies in Kielce and was ordained a priest on 5 August 1849. He studied at KU Leuven in Belgium, earning a Bachelor of Sacred Theology in 1852 and later a Doctor of Sacred Theology. He also spent time in Rome translating works from the Council of Trent. Returning to Poland in 1854, he became a professor at the Kielce seminary.

In 1855 he became vice-regent of the seminary, defender of the bond, and honorary canon of the cathedral chapter of Lublin. In 1862 he was rector of the Theological Academy in Warsaw, where he taught pastoral theology.
Bishop and archbishop
On 16 March 1863 Pope Pius IX appointed him bishop of Płock, and he was consecrated on 6 December 1863. In 1868 he was exiled to Veliky Novgorod, staying there until 1875. He then became bishop of Kujawy–Kaliska (1875–1883). In 1883 he was named archbishop of Warsaw and received the pallium on 6 May 1883 in Saint Petersburg.
Death and burial
Popiel died on 7 December 1912 in Warsaw at the age of 87. He was buried in St. John’s Archcathedral.
