William Albert Turnage (December 9, 1942 – October 15, 2017) was a leader in U.S. conservation. He led The Wilderness Society from 1978 to 1985 and was the business manager for photographer Ansel Adams. Turnage helped professionalize the Wilderness Society and was a vocal critic of James G. Watt, the Reagan Administration’s Interior Secretary. He was born in Tucson and grew up in Washington, D.C. He earned a history degree from Yale University in 1965 and began Yale Law School before switching to the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He met Adams through the Yale Chubb Fellowship and left school after Adams invited him to manage his photography.
