William Oldfield (British politician)

William Henry Oldfield (1881–1961) was a British Labour MP and trade unionist. Born in Sowerby Bridge, he worked as a cotton worker. He served as Secretary of the Cotton Trades and Labour Council and as President of the Cotton Spinners' Association. He was a Manchester City Councillor from 1928 to 1945 and an Alderman from 1945 to 1961. As Labour Agent for Gorton, he was chosen to stand for a Manchester seat in a wartime by-election in 1942 after William Wedgwood Benn became a peer. He was elected unopposed and held the seat until 1955.
