William Newton (sport shooter)

William Savage Newton (1878 – 6 January 1915) was a British sport shooter who competed in the 50 yard free pistol event at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Born in Montreal, Canada, his family later moved to England and settled in Surbiton, Surrey. He worked as an engineer and served as a Captain in the Honourable Artillery Company. Newton was a Freemason, joining FitzRoy Lodge No 569 in London in 1913. He was killed in Belgium during World War I, aged 36, and is buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.
