Wayne Chambers
Wayne Chambers (October 29, 1936 – November 18, 1999) was an American jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. He was born in Sasakwa, Oklahoma, and became well known in the early 1960s as the leading rider for Mongo, a colt owned by Montpelier Stable. In 1963 and 1964 he won several major races, including the Widener Handicap, United Nations Handicap, and the Washington, D.C. International Stakes, with Mongo earning the title of 1963 American Champion Turf Horse. Chambers also won riding titles at Ak-Sar-Ben (1957) and Pimlico (1963). He rode in the Kentucky Derby in 1960, 1964, and 1974, with his best Derby finish being fourth in 1964 aboard Roman Brother; this horse also gave him his best Preakness result. Chambers retired from racing in 1975 and returned to Oklahoma, where he died in 1999 in Oklahoma City.
