War of the Spider Queen is a six-book fantasy series set in the Forgotten Realms. Published between 2002 and 2005 by Wizards of the Coast, the six novels tell one big story about the drow (dark elves) and their spider goddess Lolth. Each book is written by a different author, with R. A. Salvatore overseeing the project. Gerald Brom created the cover art for all six books.

Overview
The drow city of Menzoberranzan is ruled by women who worship Lolth. One day Lolth goes silent, and spells stop flowing to the priestesses. Males begin to vanish, and the city faces threats from inside and outside. A group of drow—including priests, fighters, spellcasters, and mercenaries—are sent to uncover the reason for Lolth’s silence and to keep the city safe. The story blends political maneuvering, betrayal, warfare, and journeys to dangerous places in the Underdark and beyond.

- Gromph Baenre — The Archmage of Menzoberranzan who plays a crucial role in defending the city.
- Kaanyr Vhok — Leader of a brutal army allied with Nimor at one point.
- The few other factions and drow houses play supporting roles as the city and its people navigate danger.

Plot highlights (easy-to-understand snapshot)
- Lolth’s silence triggers fear and stealthy power plays among the drow ruling class.
- A six-drow expedition, led by Quenthel, visits other drow cities (starting with Ched Nasad) to uncover the cause and to secure allies and supplies.
- An insurrection of male drow and slave forces tests Menzoberranzan’s defenses; later, the city’s magical power is strained as outside armies move in.
- The group travels to the Demonweb Pits, Lolth’s domain, seeking an audience with the goddess to restore spells and order.
- Danifae rises to power as the Yor’thae, Lolth’s chosen, while Jeggred is torn between loyalties to Quenthel and Danifae.
- Ryld Argith is killed in Annihilation; Pharaun uses cunning to help the group navigate chaos on the Ship of Chaos.
- Alliances shift as Nimor and Kaanyr Vhok push their own agendas, and Gromph Baenre fights to save his city from inside and outside threats.
- In the final acts, Lolth’s power is argued over, and the group completes a dangerous trek to Lolth’s realm. The reality of Lolth’s presence returns, and the party faces hard choices about loyalty and faith.
- The war ends as Gromph destroys the phylactery of the Lichdrow Dyrr, removing a major threat. In the end, Lolth’s power is restored, new leaders rise and fall, and the city stabilizes—though the stories of these characters continue in other adventures.

Ending and aftermath
- The series closes with the destruction of Dyrr’s phylactery and the fall of dangerous plots, marking the end of War of the Spider Queen. Several key characters face life-changing fates: Danifae becomes Lolth’s Yor’thae, Halisstra is punished for her disloyalties, Jeggred dies, and Pharaun is left dead by Quenthel’s decision in the final moments.

Reception and legacy
- The books were popular and helped bring attention to drow-focused stories within the Forgotten Realms. They were released in gift sets and later collected in omnibus editions, continuing to attract readers who enjoy intricated politics, betrayal, and power struggles among the drow.
