Waingapu
Waingapu is the largest town in the eastern half of Sumba island, in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It is the capital of East Sumba Regency. The town covers about 125.8 square kilometers and had about 71,218 residents in mid-2023. The local time zone is UTC+8.
Nearby history: About 5 km south of Waingapu lies Lambanapu, a prehistoric site dated to around 2800 BC.
Transport
- Airport: Umbu Mehang Kunda (IATA: WGP, ICAO: WRRW) serves Waingapu.
- Ferry ports: Waingapu has a new port (near the old port). Pelni ships KM Awu and KM Wilis travel through the area on long-distance routes including Bali, Bima, Flores, Sumba, Timor, Kupang, and Kalabahi. The Sabuk Nusantara company runs weekly freight and passenger boats to Sumbawa, Flores, and Timor. ASDP Indonesia Ferry operates smaller ferries to Aimere, Ende, Savu, and Kupang on varying schedules (sea conditions can affect service).
- Land travel: Waingapu has two bus stations on its outskirts (south and west); most buses depart from the central Kota Terminal in the town.

- The town is divided into two districts: Waingapu District (west) and Kambera District (east). They include 11 urban villages (kelurahan) and 4 rural villages (desa).
Climate
- Waingapu has a tropical savanna climate, bordering hot semi-arid. It is very humid year-round, with a cooler dry season and a hotter wet season. It is one of the driest places in Indonesia, receiving about 900 mm of rain per year.
