View from Stalheim, or Fra Stalheim, is a famous 1842 oil painting by Johan Christian Dahl. Measuring 190 by 246 cm, it is kept in the National Gallery of Norway in Oslo (NG.M.01060). The canvas shows the view from the Stalheim plateau in Voss, looking down Nærøydalen toward the Jordalsnuten peak. Late afternoon light and a rainbow frame a small village, while the surrounding mountains rise above. Dahl aimed to mix realistic detail with the grandeur of Norway’s mountains, turning the landscape into a symbol of national identity. The rainbow is a recurring motif symbolizing peace and grace. The painting was based on sketches from 1826, with Dahl beginning work in 1836 and finishing in 1842. It was made for Countess Wedel of Bogstad and donated to the National Gallery in 1914 by Carl Gustav Wedel-Jarlsberg. It is regarded as one of Dahl’s best works and helped make Stalheim a destination for visitors, contributing to the later building of a luxury hotel there in 1885.
