Vatnsfell Power Station is a hydroelectric plant in Iceland’s Highlands, at the south end of Lake Þórisvatn near the Sprengisandur highland road. Construction started in 1999 and it began operating in 2001. It is run by Landsvirkjun, Iceland’s national power company, and it mainly generates electricity during the peak winter months when demand is highest. The station has two turbines, each with 45 MW of capacity, giving a total installed capacity of 90 MW, and it uses a hydraulic head of 67 meters. The dam is 30 meters high and 730 meters long, creating Lake Þórisvatn from a catchment area of about 2,833 square kilometers. Lead engineering was provided by Mannvit Engineering.
