Undera
Undera is a small town in northern Victoria, Australia, in the Goulburn Valley and the City of Greater Shepparton. It sits about 211 km north of Melbourne and 26 km north-west of Shepparton. The population was 442 at the 2016 census, down from 545 in 2011.
The town was surveyed in 1874 and named Undera; the Post Office began operating on 24 August 1875. The name is thought to come from an Aboriginal word meaning “fat,” and the area was previously known as Mundoona. A school opened in 1876, followed by Catholic and Presbyterian churches in 1877.
The surrounding district extends north to Undera North and along a bend of the Goulburn River. While part of the Goulburn Valley irrigation area, the northern area once supported a timber industry up to the 1940s and is now used for mixed grazing and farming.
Undera has a small school, a church, and a memorial hall built in 1928, plus a large reserve with a motorcycle track and a tennis court. The town has an Australian Rules football team competing in the Kyabram & District Football League.
Undera Park Speedway is a 320-metre motorcycle speedway track at the Undera Park Recreation Reserve. It has hosted major events, including rounds of the Australian Solo Championship, the Australian Under-21 and Under-16 Championships, the Australian Sidecar Championship, and Victorian championships.
