Tom Curren, born July 3, 1964 in Newport Beach, California, is an American former professional surfer and musician. He was the first American to win the World Surf League title, claiming world championships in 1985, 1986 and 1990. With 33 event wins, he ranks among surfing’s most successful competitors, second only to Kelly Slater. Curren is known for his intense drive and distinctive, smooth style. He retired from full-time competition in the mid-1990s but still appears in some contests as a wildcard and on the World Qualifying Tour. He joined the World Tour in 1983 and faced legends like Rabbit Bartholomew, Shaun Tomson, and Cheyne Horan. A famous moment came at Margaret River in 1990 when he rode a 1,200-foot wave from take-off to the Rivermouth and then walked back to re‑enter the lineup. Early in his career he rode for Channel Islands and helped develop boards such as the Black Beauty and Red Beauty. Curren has worked with surf designer George Greenough and is a playable character in Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer video game.
