Thomas Wentworth (British Army officer)
Lieutenant-General Thomas Wentworth (c. 1693–1747) was a British Army officer and politician from Sunninghill, Berkshire. He served in the War of Jenkins' Ear and in the Jacobite rising of 1745, and sat in the House of Commons as MP for Whitchurch from 1743 until his death. He was the younger son of Sir Mathew Wentworth, 3rd Baronet, and Elizabeth Osbaldeston, and the brother of Sir William Wentworth, 4th Baronet. He studied at Oxford and married Elizabeth Lord in 1720. From 1737 to 1745 he was colonel of what would become the 24th Regiment of Foot. He led land troops in the Cartagena expedition after the deaths of the original commanders, arriving in 1741 with a fleet under Sir Chaloner Ogle to support Admiral Vernon, but the campaign failed and many soldiers died mainly from disease. He died in November 1747 without leaving heirs.
