Salem Mitchell
Salem Mitchell, born in 1998 in San Diego, California, is an American model best known for her many facial freckles. She was discovered on Instagram and is signed with Freedom Models LA (she previously worked with Ford Models). Mitchell is African American with a Filipino grandmother and studied dance at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, graduating in 2016, then studied business marketing at San Diego State University. She rose to fame after posting a viral photo of herself with a bruised banana to reply to trolls who compared her freckles to overripened fruit, which led to a Paper Magazine feature. She has appeared in music videos for SZA and Cardi B, and worked with GAP, Converse, and Savage X Fenty. Her first cover was Numéro Berlin, and Beyoncé asked her to model Lemonade apparel. Mitchell has faced online bullying about her freckles, and Teen Vogue covered a response she wrote about cultural appropriation and the devaluation of Black features. In 2019 she teamed up with Known Supply for the eco-friendly Only Human collection and advocates for sustainability in fashion.
