The Sound of Speed
The Sound of Speed is a compilation album by The Jesus and Mary Chain that collects singles and rare tracks. It was released in Japan on 25 October 1992 and worldwide on 12 July 1993. The recordings span 1988–1993 and the music is alternative rock. The album runs 74 minutes and 11 seconds and was released by Blanco y Negro. It was produced by Jim Reid and William Reid. In the band’s discography, it sits after Honey's Dead (1992) and before Stoned & Dethroned (1994).
The Japanese version differs from the worldwide edition: it drops several tracks including Snakedriver, Something I Can't Have, Write Record Release Blues, Tower of Song, Little Red Rooster, Lowlife and Reverberation, but adds Subway, In the Black, Terminal Beach and I'm Glad I Never.
The Sound of Speed reached number 15 on the UK Albums Chart. The Independent gave it a mixed review, noting that the best moments are cover songs such as Guitarman (an Elvis tune done in a Dylan-like style), Little Red Rooster, and Leonard Cohen's Tower of Song, whose weary mood fits the Mary Chain.
All songs are written by Jim Reid and William Reid, except where another writer is credited.
