The Lofts Apartments
The Lofts Apartments, formerly known as the Medical Arts Building or the Becker Building, are located at 26 Sheldon Boulevard SE in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Built in 1926 as offices for medical professionals, it was designed by B. K. Gibson of Chicago. Ray E. Becker led the project, with construction by Owen Ames Kimball; the first two floors were completed in 1926 and the upper floors were added in 1927. An additional section was added in 1931, designed by Henry H. Turner. By the late 1920s, more than 30 doctors had offices there, and Becker opened a Hudson-Essex car dealership on the ground floor. The building remained a medical hub into the 1980s.
In 1996, Grand Pointe Limited Partnership purchased the building and converted it into 55 apartments, with commercial space on the first floor. The Lofts Apartments is a six-story, L-shaped structure made of reinforced concrete with brick veneer and stone details. It features Gothic Revival and Chicago School design elements, with seven bays along Sheldon Boulevard and six bays along Weston Street. Brick piers divide the bays, each containing four double-hung windows per floor, with limestone sills and cast-stone lintels. The corner on the first floor opens to a drive that leads to a parking ramp behind the building.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 18, 2000.
