The Grass Is Greener (album)
The Grass Is Greener is a studio album by Colosseum, released in January 1970. It was recorded in 1969 and runs 38 minutes and 30 seconds. The album was issued only in the United States and Canada on the Dunhill label, distributed by ABC, as a North American counterpart to Valentyne Suite.
The record features four tracks with Colosseum’s new guitarist/vocalist Clem Clempson (recorded in winter 1969): Jumping Off the Sun, Lost Angeles, Rope Ladder to the Moon, and Bolero. It also includes three tracks from the 1969 Valentyne Suite that Clem Clempson sings and plays on instead of James Litherland: Butty’s Blues, The Machine Demands a Sacrifice, and The Grass Is Greener. A fourth track, Elegy, appears to be the same as the Valentyne Suite version with Litherland’s vocals.
The Grass Is Greener was later remastered and added as a bonus disc in Sanctuary Records’ 2003 deluxe CD edition of Valentyne Suite.
Reception: Critics praised the album for its strong guitar work by Clem Clempson and the saxophone/woodwinds by Dick Heckstall-Smith. Jumping Off the Sun and Rope Ladder to the Moon were highlighted, and the title track was called a standout. Some reviewers felt the album is well balanced and diverse, with bluesy-jazz-rock songs, though Jumping Off the Sun is seen by some as a touch too pop-oriented.
