Tanggula railway station
The Tanggula railway station, also called Dangla, is in Amdo County, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, near the border with Tanggula Town in Qinghai Province. It sits on the Qingzang (Qinghai–Tibet) railway and opened on July 1, 2006 as an unstaffed station. The station has three tracks, with one platform and another track that ends in a very short stub platform. At 5,068 metres (16,627 feet) above sea level, it is the highest railway station in the world, higher than stations in Bolivia and Peru. It is very close to the highest point of the rail line, at about 5,072 metres. The station is about 1.25 kilometres long and covers roughly 77,000 square metres. Because the surrounding area is sparsely populated, there is little or no regular passenger service stopping there. Trains may pause to wait for an opposing train to pass, but passengers must stay on the train.
