Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, season 1 is a 12-episode animated series on Paramount+. It is a spin-off of the 2023 film Mutant Mayhem and follows the four teenage turtles as they balance school life with being heroes in New York City. The season premiered on August 9, 2024, and a second season is planned for 2025.
The show is created by Christopher Yost and Alan Wan, produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, Point Grey Pictures, and Titmouse. The four turtles and April O’Neil are voiced by the same actors who starred in Mutant Mayhem: Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, Brady Noon, and Ayo Edebiri. The series uses Mutant Mayhem as a guide in how it’s written and animated.
Titmouse provides the animation, giving Tales a rough, 2D “punk rock” look that nods to the original TMNT comics. The series often shows the turtles’ lives from their point of view, with a light, teen-focused tone. Splinter speaks in a quirky language called vermin, voiced by Fred Tatasciore. The world feels more grounded than some earlier TMNT works, and the turtles sometimes work apart from each other to develop their own personalities.
The season features several guest characters, including Bishop and Rod, with appearances by Leatherhead, Wingnut, and Ray Fillet. It also introduces additional new characters like Pigeon Pete, Goldfin, Lee the Eel, and Mustang Sally. The planning and voice work were done with the film as a reference point, but Tales tells its own stories about growing up as a teen hero.
Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles received positive reception for its voice acting, animation, and action. It earned five Annie Award nominations and a high rating from Rotten Tomatoes, while critics praised its energy and heart. The first season was also released on DVD and Blu-ray on November 12, 2024.
