Horizon: An American Saga
Horizon: An American Saga is a planned four-film Western epic created by Kevin Costner, who also directs, co-writes, produces, and stars. He worked with Jon Baird on the script, based on an original story Costner helped develop with Baird and Mark Kasdan. The films follow multiple characters across pre- and post-Civil War America as people push into new lands, spanning about twelve years.
Costner began developing the project in 1988. It grew from a two-lead story into a full ensemble saga and eventually into four connected films. After a long development path that included a 2003 Disney partnership that didn’t pan out, the project expanded to four films with a darker Western tone. Costner put in substantial personal investment, with additional funding from two unnamed investors.
The movies are a joint production between Territory Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and New Line Cinema. The budget has been reported as around $100 million for the first two films. Each film is planned to run about 2 hours 45 minutes. The plan is to release chapters a few months apart and later repackage the series as a TV miniseries.
The cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jamie Campbell Bower, Luke Wilson, Thomas Haden Church, Jena Malone, Alejandro Edda, Tatanka Means, Michael Rooker, Isabelle Fuhrman and others. Filming began in Utah in 2023, with multiple chapters shot close in time.
Chapter 1, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, was released in 2024 after a market-facing trailer announced a June 28 release. Chapter 2 had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, 2024, and its U.S. premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 7, 2025. Its release was delayed as the project adapted to changing box-office results and other industry factors.
Work on Chapters 3 and 4 continued in 2023–2024, with production planned in Utah and a new production setup in place. By 2024–2025, Costner said the scripts for all four films were complete, with filming scheduled to continue and finish Chapter 3 before moving to Chapter 4. He envisions the completed films forming a single, large Western epic that families can enjoy together in theaters.
