Sultan Mahmood (general)

Major General Sultan Mahmood was a senior officer in the Indian Army. Born in Mysore, India, he served in the Artillery and later became Director General (Recruiting) at Army Headquarters in New Delhi. He was the younger brother of Lieutenant General Jameel Mahmood, former GOC-in-C of the Eastern Command, and a relative of Lieutenant General (retd.) Mohammad Ahmed Zaki. In the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, he commanded four medium artillery guns in the Kashmir Valley. In the 1971 war, he was part of the Indian forces that won against East Pakistan. He later commanded an artillery brigade, served as Brigadier-in-Charge in Punjab, and was the sub-area commander for Karnataka and Goa. After his promotion to major general, he became Director General (Recruiting) at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi. By 2001, he was one of only eight Muslims in the Indian Army to reach the rank of major general. He studied at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School, Bangalore.
