Su Nan-cheng
Su Nan-cheng (January 14, 1936 – September 2, 2014) was a Taiwanese politician and adviser to President Chen Shui-bian. He served as mayor of Tainan from 1977 to 1985 and as the appointed mayor of Kaohsiung from 1985 to 1990. He was the speaker of Taiwan’s National Assembly in 1999.
A member of the Kuomintang (KMT) for much of his career, Su supported Taiwan localization. He was expelled from the KMT twice: first in 1972 for running for Tainan mayor as an independent, and again in 1999 for proposing a term-extension amendment in the National Assembly against party orders. In 2003 he openly supported DPP candidate Chen Shui-bian in the 2004 presidential election.
Su earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting and statistics from National Cheng Kung University in 1959 and worked as an accountant. He was elected mayor of Tainan in 1976 as an independent; in 1981 the KMT nominated him to run again and he was re-elected. During his time as Tainan mayor he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award.
In 2001 he ran for mayor of Tainan again as an independent but lost and instead served as a city council member. He died of heart failure in Tainan in 2014 at age 78.
