Stewart Houston
Stewart Mackie Houston, born on 20 August 1949 in Dunoon, Scotland, is a former footballer and coach who played as a left back. He started his career with Chelsea in 1967 but didn’t break into the first team, then spent time at Brentford, first on loan and then permanently. In 1973 he joined Manchester United, where he played regularly for several years and helped the club win the Football League Second Division in 1975 and the FA Cup in 1977. He later played for Sheffield United and Colchester United before retiring in 1986. Houston earned one cap for Scotland in 1975.
After retiring, Houston moved into coaching and management. He became George Graham’s assistant at Arsenal and served as caretaker manager twice: in 1995 after Graham’s departure and again in 1996 after Bruce Rioch was sacked. He guided Arsenal to the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1995, where they lost to Nayim’s late goal. In 1996 he became manager of Queens Park Rangers, with Bruce Rioch as his assistant, but both were dismissed in 1997.
Houston then worked as a coach at Ipswich Town and Tottenham Hotspur, and later had a brief stint with Walsall. He also spent years as a scout for Arsenal, from 2008 to 2020.
