The gens Statia was a small plebeian family in ancient Rome. They appear in the early Republic, disappear for a long time, and don’t show up again in history until the era of Cicero. They stayed relatively undistinguished until Trajan’s reign, when Lucius Statius Aquila became consul. The name Statius is of Oscan origin, and most Statii known before the late Republic came from Samnium or Lucania. Statius is a patronymic surname, formed from the Oscan given name Statius. The Statii used the common first names, especially Lucius, Gaius, Marcus, Publius, Quintus, Titus, and Sextus; of these, Lucius, Gaius, and Marcus were the most frequent.
