State Highway 80 (New Zealand)
State Highway 80 (SH 80), also known as Mount Cook Road, is a state highway on New Zealand’s South Island. It runs about 55 kilometers between Twizel and Mount Cook Village and is mostly two lanes, with a few single-lane bridges. The road is a popular tourist route for people traveling to Aoraki / Mount Cook from Christchurch or Queenstown.
The southern end is at SH 8 (Tekapo Twizel Road) by Lake Pukaki, and the northern end is at Terrace Road / Bowen Drive near Mount Cook Village. For the first roughly 31 km, SH 80 travels north along the eastern side of Lake Pukaki, with the Mackenzie Basin to the left. About 10 km later, the Ben Ohau Range comes into view. A further 20 km takes you past the head of Lake Pukaki, where the river becomes the Tasman River. The highway continues for about 24 km and ends east of Mount Cook Village.
