State Highway 56 (New Zealand)
State Highway 56 (SH 56) is a New Zealand state highway maintained by the NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi). It runs 22.9 km (14.2 miles) from Makerua, where it begins at State Highway 57, northeast to Palmerston North from the west. The highway officially ends at Pioneer Highway at the intersection with Maxwells Line, at the northern entrance to Palmerston North. SH 56 used to connect State Highway 1 at Himatangi with State Highway 3 in Palmerston North (at the Main and Princess Streets intersection). In 1997 it was rerouted to meet SH 57 instead, and the section from Maxwells Line to SH 3 was removed from the state highway network.
