Starry Night (Mamamoo song)
Starry Night is a 2018 dance-pop song by South Korean girl group Mamamoo. It appears on their seventh EP Yellow Flower as the second single. The Korean title is 별이 빛나는 밤 (Byuli bichnaneun bam). The track blends dance-pop with Latin-inspired strings and runs 3 minutes and 32 seconds. It was written by Moonbyul, Park Woo-sang, and Kim Do-hoon, with Park Woo-sang and Kim Do-hoon also handling production.
Released March 7, 2018, Starry Night is part of Mamamoo's Four Seasons, Four Colors project, which releases EPs focusing on each member. The group released Paint Me earlier in January 2018 as a precursor to the series; Starry Night followed as the second single from Yellow Flower.
Critics reacted positively, calling the song dramatic and dynamic, and noting it met high expectations in a year when many K-pop acts experimented with Latin influences.
On the charts, Starry Night was a commercial success. It debuted at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart and stayed there for four weeks. It was the top-performing song in March 2018 on Gaon, and it later earned the group's first Gaon streaming certification for surpassing 100 million streams. It also hit number one on the Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100 and reached number eight on the Billboard World Digital Songs Sales chart. By November 2018, the track had earned platinum certification from Gaon for streaming, and by July 2019 it had 2.5 million digital downloads.
The song has other versions: a Japanese version released August 7, 2019 on Mamamoo’s 4colors album, and an orchestral remix released September 15, 2021 on I Say Mamamoo: The Best. The music video, directed by Won Ki-hong, was filmed in New Zealand and was released on Mamamoo's channels along with the single.
Starry Night is in A minor, at 124 BPM, and is 3 minutes and 32 seconds long.
