St. Peter's Church, also known as Gereja St. Peter, is in Melaka City, Malaysia, at 166 Jalan Bendahara. It is the oldest functioning Roman Catholic church in Malaysia and the third largest Catholic church in Melaka City, after the Church of St. Francis Xavier and St. Theresa's Church.

History and significance
The church was built in 1710 after a Dutch convert named Maryber Franz Amboer donated land for the project. It was named for Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen. The façade bears the Portugal crest, reflecting funding from overseas missions in Goa and Macau. For about three centuries it served as a Portuguese mission church and was attended by priests from Portugal, Goa, and Macau. After Malaysia’s independence in 1957, the church came under the ecclesial jurisdiction of the Bishops of the Portuguese Missions. In 2024, a marble statue of St. Michael was donated by Catholics in Singapore and placed in the garden near the right transept. The church passes through modern times with restorations and improvements, including a tercentenary celebration in 2010.

Architecture and interior
The church blends eastern and western architectural influences, with hints of Portuguese Baroque on the façade. Inside, it preserves the original high altar, many stained-glass windows, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. There are two side altars dedicated to the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of The Rosary, and the transept altar is dedicated to Christ’s Passion, with an alabaster statue of the Lord Before the Resurrection.

Notable features and chapels
One bell, cast in Goa in 1608, was salvaged from an earlier church. The site also includes Capella Ermida de Rosario (the Rosary Chapel), built in 1700, which served parishioners before St. Peter’s became the main church. The grounds house 14 tombstones dating from 1736 to the 1900s. Several chapels fall under St. Peter’s jurisdiction, including the Assumption Chapel (built as a wooden chapel in 1850 and rebuilt in 1919), the Chapel of St. John the Baptist (1864, later demolished), and Capella Santa Cruz (built in 1850, also known as the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception). The Rosary Chapel and other sites reflect the long history of the Portuguese community in the area.

Current status
St. Peter’s Church remains a functional church. Its rector is Fr. Lionel Thomas. Visitors are welcome, but proper dress is requested.

Notes for visitors
