Sredneuralskaya GRES
Sredneuralskaya GRES is a power plant in Sredneuralsk, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, located by the Iset river. It is owned by Enel Russia and runs mainly on natural gas, with mazut (heavy fuel oil) as a backup. The plant also provides heating to nearby towns, with heat supplied from Yekaterinburg and its satellites. It is a cogeneration plant, meaning it produces both electricity and heat.
Construction began in 1931, and the first 50 MW turbine started in 1936, making the plant operational. During World War II, the workforce declined, but Sredneuralskaya GRES helped power regional factory projects such as UralVagonZavod. In 1945 the plant was awarded the Order of Lenin and, shortly after, the Red Banner of the State Committee of Defense. By 1949 the plant had eight boilers and five turbo generators.
In 1960 a steam-based heating complex was added to supply Sverdlovsk, Verkhnyaya Pishma and Sredneuralsk with heat and hot water. To meet rising energy demand, the first line of the electro station was rebuilt by 1966 to help heat supply. Between 1967 and 1970, a third line with three 300 MW units (900 MW total) was added. In 1982 the first line switched from coal to mazut, and in 1985 a water-preparation system for heating was introduced. The plant received the Red Banner of Labor on 29 April 1986 for its high technical and economical work.
In 1993 a 300 MW unit was repurposed for heating. A gas-turbine expansion station of 11.5 MW was installed in 2002. In 2011 the plant earned certifications for OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001, and since then external audits have verified its management systems. In 2017, audits confirmed the effectiveness of the plant’s integrated management system for health, safety, environment and quality, and the Quality Management System was certified.
Recent modernization focuses on upgrading heating systems. The plant also participates in environmental and biodiversity efforts, such as stocking fish in the Iset reservoir; in 2014 more than two tonnes of valuable fish were released. A fish-protection device was installed at the Iset reservoir intake in 2017. Also in 2017, noise-damping devices were added to several units to reduce steam-noise during startup and shutdown.
In 2011 Enel added a high-efficiency 410 MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT). Since its installation, fuel efficiency improved, with about a 10% decrease in specific fuel consumption and roughly a 4% increase in net electricity production.
