Edmund Ghareeb
Edmund Ghareeb is a Lebanese-American scholar who teaches at American University in Washington and at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the American International College and MA and PhD degrees from Georgetown University.
Ghareeb has written about the potential role of new media in the Arab world. He spoke on this topic at the Aseelah Forum in Morocco and published two articles in 2000 in the Middle East Journal and Bahithat.
He co-authored a report called Iraqi Refugees: Their History, Cultures and Background Experiences. His book The Historical Dictionary of Iraq was praised by Library Journal in 2005 as one of the best reference works of 2004; a new edition was in progress.
He wrote Split Vision: Portrayal of Arabs in the American Media and co-authored War in the Gulf, which Oxford University Press released in paperback.
Ghareeb has lectured widely in the United States, the Arab world, and Europe, including lectures in Brazil, Hong Kong, and Portugal. He has written about the Kurds, the Druze, and Libya for The Encyclopedia of World Politics and Religion. He has been featured in several documentaries and interviews, including Al-Jazeera’s piece on Kurdish leader Mulla Mustafa Barzani, a Lucasfilm documentary on Gertrude Bell, a Voice of America program on Arab American immigration, and Alhurra TV; he has also appeared on C-SPAN.
