South Launceston Football Club
The South Launceston Football Club, known as the Bulldogs, is an Australian rules football team from Launceston, Tasmania. Its full name is South Launceston Football Club. The club was formed on 29 May 1986 from the merger of City-South and East Launceston. The team’s colours are royal blue, red and white, blending City-South’s red and white with East Launceston’s blue. Their club song is “It’s A Grand Old Flag” with some lyric tweaks.
They play in the Northern Tasmanian Football Association (NTFA) at Youngtown Oval, which holds about 2,000 people. The club president is Wayne Mitchell, the coach is Aaron Viney, and the captain is Luke McCarty.
History and leagues
- 1986–1997: TFL Statewide League.
- 1998–2008: Northern Tasmanian Football League (NTFL).
- 2009–2013: Tasmanian Football League (TSL).
- 2014 onward: Northern Tasmanian Football Association (NTFA).
In the statewide leagues, South Launceston never made finals and often finished near the bottom, with a best finish of 6th in 1992 and three wooden spoons. After joining the NTFL in 1998, they won premierships in 1998 and 1999.
In 2013 the club won the minor premiership and the Grand Final in the TSL under Mitch Thorp, giving them their statewide premiership. However, in July 2013 the club voted not to pursue a long-term TSL license, and the Prospect clubs later formed a new license in the competition.
Late in 2013 the club rejoined the NTFA and began playing in that league in 2014, going on to win the NTFA premiership by defeating Deloraine in the Grand Final.
