Soundtrack 2 My Life
Soundtrack 2 My Life is a song by Kid Cudi from his debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day (2009). The track is 3 minutes and 56 seconds long and falls into the alternative hip hop genre. Kid Cudi wrote the lyrics and Emile Haynie wrote the music; Haynie also produced the song.
The music video, directed by Jason Goldwatch, was released in 2010.
Cudi made his national TV debut on February 19, 2009, on BET's 106 & Park with Kanye West to premiere the video for Day 'n' Nite. During that appearance, Cudi rapped a verse a cappella, which would become the first verse of Soundtrack 2 My Life. In a 2009 interview, Cudi explained that the opening lines were meant to show an ignorant mindset and what someone thinks when backed against the wall.
The video, which Cudi directed, shows him performing and sometimes being drunk and silly. It was first posted to SoundCloud in 2008.
Soundtrack 2 My Life opens Cudi’s dreamlike realm, rapping about his mother’s work ethic, his father’s death, and the depression that followed. The lyrics include references to pop culture such as 99 Problems, Jay-Z, Kanye West, the 1980s show Charles in Charge, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, and the movie The Sixth Sense.
Chart and certification information: the song peaked at number five on the US Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. It was certified double platinum by the RIAA in 2019 for sales of over two million copies in the United States. It also served as the theme song for MTV’s World of Jenks.
