Soconusco, Veracruz
Soconusco is a municipality in the Mexican state of Veracruz, about 275 kilometers from the state capital Xalapa. It covers an area of 94.59 square kilometers and sits at about 17.97°N, 94.883°W. It is bordered to the north by Soteapan and Chinameca, to the east by Jaltipan de Morelos, to the south by Texistepec and Oluta, and to the west by Acayucan. The area is watered by creeks that flow from the Chacalapa River, a tributary of the Coatzacoalcos River.
The climate is warm and wet all year, with rains in summer and autumn. The main crops are maize, beans, rice, and oranges.
Festivals and traditions include a May celebration in honor of Virgen de la Concepción, a June celebration for San Antonio de Padua, and a July festival for Santa Ana, mother of the Virgin Mary, who is one of the town’s patron saints. On April 26, there is a local tradition where the prettiest young woman is chosen to compete for the title La Reina de La Sal (Queen of Pink Salt), along with a few young men who compete for El Rey Feo (the Ugly King). These are town traditions near Soconusco.
Benito Juárez is a small town within the municipality that has a saltwater well. The water is boiled to produce Pink Salt, a product known for its sodium content and health associations in local tradition. In December, there is a celebration in honor of Virgen de Guadalupe.
