SIN (Student Independent News) is Galway’s online student newspaper. Based at the University of Galway, it serves about 15,000 students and is published entirely online. It covers Galway events on and off campus, with entertainment and features that aim to inform, provoke debate, and shape opinion. The publication is funded by the University of Galway Students’ Union and welcomes articles from current and former students, lecturers, and staff.

Founded in 2001, SIN replaced the earlier Unity student periodical (1959 to the late 1990s). It used to print a 32-page tabloid, but moved online in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The SIN website, Sin.ie, hosts a gallery, articles, author profiles, and archives.

SIN has earned several awards. In 2019, it was named Newspaper of the Year at the National Student Media Awards, with editor Áine Kenny winning Editor of the Year. In 2023, SIN and Sin.ie received nominations for Travel and Road Safety journalism and for Arts & Pop Culture features; Caoimhe Looney won Road Safety. In 2025, editor Emma van Oosterhout and news sub-editor Fiona Zokou won the National Student Media Award for Collaborative Journalism of the Year, and SIN was named Student Media Outlet of the Year by AMLÉ.

The paper has covered notable campus events, including a December 2008 protest where student demonstrators challenged visiting ministers Eamon Ó Cuív and Batt O’Keefe; a February 2009 incident when former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was blocked from speaking at the Literary and Debating Society; and extensive coverage of RAG week following funding controversies.
