Wooshin Golden Suites fire
Wooshin Golden Suites fire
The Wooshin Golden Suites fire was a major high‑rise blaze inan officetel in Marine City, Haeundae District, Busan, South Korea, on October 1, 2010. The fire started on the fourth floor from a spark in an electrical outlet and quickly spread up the building via external flammable cladding, reaching the top floors within about 20 minutes. Five people were injured.
Causes and background
- There was no sprinkler in the room where the fire began.
- The windows’ reinforced glass hindered firefighters.
- The building used flammable aluminium composite cladding with a polyethylene core, along with glass wool or polystyrene insulation, which helped the fire spread rapidly up the facade.
- The fire largely climbed a vertical U‑shaped indentation in the exterior, creating a chimney effect, possibly helped by sea winds.
Firefighting and timeline
- Firefighters deployed a ladder truck up to 52 meters, but the fire spread too fast to control at first.
- Within about 20 minutes, the blaze had reached the 38th floor.
- The Korea Times reported the blaze was extinguished after about 2.5 hours, with dozens of fire engines and a helicopter dropping water on the building.
- Some researchers say the initial 4th‑floor fire was out by around 1 pm, and the entire building was fire‑free by about 6:48 pm.
- Some residents were evacuated by helicopter from the roof.
Casualties
- 4 residents and 1 firefighter were injured. No deaths were reported.
