Sikome Lake
Sikome Aquatic Facility, commonly called Sikome Lake, is a man-made lake in Calgary, Alberta, inside Fish Creek Provincial Park. It sits in the Bow River basin at about 1,005 metres above sea level and covers about 0.4 square kilometres (40 hectares or 99 acres). The lake opened in late summer 1978 as a public swimming area.
In summer, up to 20,000 people can visit on busy weekends. The beach is staffed by Alberta Provincial Parks aquatic staff.
In winter, Sikome Lake used to be a skating rink until the mid-to-late 1980s. Now the water is drained each winter and takes about three weeks to fill in spring. A water filtration system that chlorinates the water was installed in 1991 for about $1.8 million.
The lake has closed for various reasons: in 1990 and 1998 due to bird droppings contamination; in 2004 for construction and flooding. A fence was built in 2013 to improve safety and reduce unwanted behavior.
Open hours are 11am–6pm Monday to Thursday, and 10am–7pm on weekends.
