Shaler Cliffs
Shaler Cliffs are tall rock cliffs in Antarctica, about 2 miles east-southeast of Charpentier Pyramid in the northern Herbert Mountains, Shackleton Range. They rise to about 1,000 meters. The cliffs were photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy in 1967 and surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey from 1968 to 1971. They were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Nathaniel S. Shaler (1841–1906), an American geologist who co-authored Glaciers (1881) and wrote many works on glacial geology. The area, in Coats Land, features names honoring glacial geologists.
