Serta is an American mattress maker based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. It began in 1931 as Sleeper, Inc., started by 13 mattress makers who licensed the Serta name. Over time, eight independent licensees ran the business, with the largest licensee, National Bedding Company, controlling most U.S. licenses.

In 2005, two private equity groups bought National Bedding Co. Today, Serta International is part of Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC, based in Doraville, Georgia. Other Serta licensees include Serta Dormae in Texas, Serta Restokraft in Michigan, and Salt Lake Mattress in Utah.

In 2018, Serta Simmons Bedding merged with Tuft & Needle. In January 2023, Serta Simmons Bedding filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Serta makes four main kinds of mattresses: traditional innerspring, gel-infused memory foam, hybrids (a mix of springs and foam), and Talalay latex (made in Salt Lake City). Their products are used by hotels such as Hilton and Wyndham, and they’re sold on ShopNBC.
