Selmeston
Selmeston is a small village and civil parish in the Wealden district of East Sussex, England. It lies about eight miles east of Lewes, just north of the A27 between Lewes and Polegate, and covers about 6.7 square kilometres with a population of 159 at the 2011 census. The parish has a single street along a route between the Ouse and Cuckmere rivers. The area has long been inhabited, with Mesolithic settlements found around the church and Saxon burials nearby. The church, dedicated to St Mary, dates back to around 1100; it burned in 1860 and was rebuilt in 1867 by Ewan Christian. Domesday Book entries note two large houses in the parish, Sherrington Manor and Tilton House. The springs in the area provided water until the 1950s. The cricket pitch was donated in 1807 and the local team existed by 1834. Selmeston village school (built in 1846) is now a private home and a Grade II listed building; the village hall opened in 1935 and is shared with Alciston. Local government is via a parish meeting, with Wealden District Council (Alfriston ward) and East Sussex County Council (Alfriston, East Hoathly & Hellingly ward). The parish is in the Lewes parliamentary constituency; in 2024 the MP is James MacCleary of the Liberal Democrats.
