Scottish Jamaicans
Scottish Jamaicans are Jamaicans who have Scottish roots. They can have European, mixed African, or Asian ancestry with Scottish ancestors. Scots first arrived in Jamaica in 1656 when Oliver Cromwell sent about 1,200 prisoners of war. More followed in the late 1600s after the failed Darien scheme in Panama. After Scotland joined England in 1707, Scots could participate more in England’s colonies, including Jamaica. Some Scottish Jamaicans owned enslaved people.
