Born in Duncan, British Columbia, McCaig grew up in Kamloops and was baptized in the Presbyterian tradition. His spiritual journey included exploring different Christian denominations before becoming a Catholic. After studying the early Church Fathers and saints, he entered the Catholic faith and was received into full communion in 1987, receiving confirmation and first communion at the Easter Vigil.

Education-wise, McCaig earned a BA in History from Carleton University, a BA in Sacred Theology from Saint Paul University in Ottawa, and a Master of Divinity from St. Augustine’s Seminary and the University of Toronto.

McCaig joined the Companions of the Cross in 1989 and was ordained a priest on June 3, 1995, by Archbishop Marcel André J. Gervais. From 2000 to 2006 he held roles including associate pastor, parish administrator, hospital chaplain, and Director of Formation. In 2006 he was elected General Superior of the Companions of the Cross, a position he held until his 2016 appointment as bishop (re-elected in 2012).

As a bishop, McCaig was consecrated on May 31, 2016, at Notre Dame Cathedral. The principal consecrator was Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, with Bishops Donald J. Thériault and Christian Heribert Riesbeck as co-consecrators.

Beyond his diocesan work, McCaig has helped train NET Ministries missionaries and continues to assist in their training. He serves on the boards of Renewal Ministries Canada and Catholic Christian Outreach (since 2013). In 2017 he led a Lourdes pilgrimage for a delegation of military personnel. He is also the co-chaplain to the Spiritual Motherhood of Priests Apostolate in Ottawa and remains involved in various missionary and formation efforts.
