Sapele is a major town and Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria. It sits on the Ethiope River in the Niger Delta and serves as an important port. The town’s administration is based in Sapele, and it lies about 68 kilometers south of Benin City, connected by the A2 highway to Warri and Benin.

Economy and industry
Sapele is at the heart of Nigeria’s timber industry, with sawmills and a large plywood and veneer factory. Rubber processing, plastics, chemicals, and footwear are also produced here. The town hosts the Sapele Township Stadium, opened in 2013, with a capacity of 10,000.

History and people
The name Sapele comes from the local Uriapele deity. In the 19th century it grew as a trading center, and in 1891 the British established a vice-consulate there, helping it become an important port and administrative hub. The town developed into a cosmopolitan area with many ethnic groups living together, including the Okpe (the indigenous group), Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Urhobo people.

Population
Sapele has grown a lot over the years. It’s estimated to have around 220,000 people in 2023.

Natural resources and infrastructure
The area is known for the Sapele hardwood, Entandrophragma cylindricum, widely used around the world. The African Timber and Plywood factory, once the largest timber complex in the region, was a major employer and helped build much of the town’s infrastructure. The nearby Ogorode district houses large power plants, contributing to Nigeria’s electricity supply.

Climate
The climate is hot and humid year-round, with a warm, cloudy wet season and a hot, partly cloudy dry season.
