Ryrie Street Presbyterian Church
Ryrie Street Presbyterian Church, commonly known as the Steeple Church, was a Presbyterian church in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The United Presbyterians first met in 1851 in a Masonic Hall. After a storm destroyed a planned church in McKillop Street, the group moved to the Mechanics Institute on Ryrie Street. The church was built in 1856–1857 in Gothic Revival style by architect John Young and opened in 1857 next to the Mechanics Institute. In 1914, as Geelong’s Presbyterian churches reunited, the church was sold to the Band of Hope Union. The steeple was removed and shops were built along the street frontage. The congregation then joined St David’s Presbyterian Church in Newtown. The building later became part of the Geelong Arts Centre.
