Development Bank of Rwanda (BRD) is Rwanda’s development bank. It is a parastatal licensed by the National Bank of Rwanda to provide long-term financing and related services that support the country’s development. Based in Kigali, BRD began in 1967 and focuses on funding major development projects.

BRD offers a range of products, including long-term loans, housing and mortgage finance, export/import finance, leasing, trade finance, capacity building, financial advisory services, and management services. It is organized as a Public Company Limited by Shares, with a share capital of about RWF 57.8 billion. As of 2011, the bank held roughly USD 122 million in assets and about USD 42 million in shareholders’ equity.

Key historical milestones include a focus on growing development finance from 2000 to 2009, rebuilding after the 1994 genocide, and expanding rural and private-sector financing. In April 2011, BRD merged its advisory services arm (BRD BAS) and its development fund (BRD BDF) into a new entity, BRD Development Fund Ltd (BDF Ltd), to improve efficiency. In the same year, BRD acquired Banque de l’Habitat du Rwanda (BHR), expanding its asset base to over RWF 72 billion and strengthening mortgage and housing finance.

BRD operates from its Kigali headquarters and aims to fund Rwanda’s development, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable growth through long-term financing and related financial services.
