The Royal Academy Exhibition of 1861 was the 93rd Summer Exhibition. It ran at the National Gallery in London from 6 May to 27 July 1861. It showed works by many famous Victorian artists and architects. Some senior painters did not submit, including Millais, Maclise, and Frith. Younger artists such as Leighton, Faed, and Goodall stood out. The show came soon after the start of the American Civil War, and several paintings carried anti-slavery themes. Notable works include Richard Ansdell's The Hunted Slaves and Eyre Crowe's Slaves Waiting for the Sale. Henry Nelson O'Neil also exhibited The Parting Cheer, about emigrants leaving the Thames for the British Empire.
